So, what’s cool about Annabelle? Perhaps I should have broken this down like a collectible card…Īssigned Wallflower Status Because… Her family is flat-out broke. At one ball, just as every other for the previous seasons, the four women find themselves seated and without a partner in sight. For all her beauty, the Peyton financial situation is no secret, and rumors circulate throughout the ton about Annabelle–all the peers seem perfectly eager to wait for her to fall into ruin, and then keep her as a mistress.Įnter the intrepid Wallflowers. Annabelle is determined to find a husband but has gone for seasons without a single proposal. Her father’s death has left her family in debt, and as women in Regency England, there is naught to do about it. Unfortunately, she and her mother are in dire financial straits. The rounders game between the ladies is classic! I highly recommend this book and the entire series.Annabelle Peyton is by all accounts a beautiful woman–the perfect English Rose.

I love this series and this is my second favorite of the series. There is something about Annabelle’s desperation and the monies ways of Rhett that echo in this book for me. The only negative is that Annabelle is not the most likeable of heroines at the beginning of the book.Īnnabelle and Simon remind me quite a bit of Scarlett and Rhett. The characters and the situation make me smile. This book is interesting because it deals with the intersection between the aristocratic classes and the new industrialists that are changing the entire world including the social world. Simon Hunt is of the new generation…a butcher’s son who has made a fortune but exists only on the fringes of society. Annabelle is of the genteel class but her family has fallen on hard times since the death of her father and she desperately seeks marriage to a peer to rescue her family. SECRETS OF A SUMMER NIGHT is the story of Annabelle Peyton and Simon Hunt.
